Olympic & Paralympic Reform Commission Listening Session

Congress created the independent Commission on the State of U.S. Olympics & Paralympics through the Empowering Olympic, Paralympic, and Amateur Athletes Act of 2020. Its members will produce a report that includes, among other features, “an evaluation of the functions” of the National Governing Bodies (NGBs) and an analysis of the participation in amateur athletics of women, disabled individuals, and minorities.

At the Summit, the Commission hosted its first listening session on items. Representatives from key sectors (NGBs, community recreation groups, school sports) shared insights with leadership of the Commission on:

  • What’s the best role for the U.S. Olympic & Paralympics Committee (USOPC) and its affiliated NGBs in supporting the development of youth and community sports?

  • How can NGBs more effectively coordinate activities with school programs and local providers?

  • How can they help with coach recruitment and training, abuse prevention, best practices in sport and program development, or other areas of need?

Conversation led by Dionne Koller, co-chair of the Commission on the State of U.S. Olympics and Paralympics

  • Ron Nocetti, Executive Director, California Interscholastic Federation

  • Renata Simril, President and CEO, LA84 Foundation

  • Kathryn Carson, Chair, USA Gymnastics, and Member, NGB Congressional Commission Task Force
